SLR International Corporation is seeking a motivated Planning Intern to join our dynamic and growing Community Planning Team in our New Haven or Cheshire, Connecticut office.

This internship position offers candidates the opportunity to work under the supervision of professional planners as well as a broad team of SLR’s collaborative professional staff ranging from engineers to landscape architects to climate specialists and to contribute to a diverse and challenging range of planning projects. The Intern will gain hands on experience working with staff and mentors. They will perform assignments designed to utilize and develop their professional skills and knowledge that are essential in the field of community planning.

This internship is a temporary seasonal position offered for Summer 2022 with the flexibility to continue as scheduling fits with SLR’s needs. This is a non-benefits eligible position.

Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively interface with staff, clients and the public
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to identify and solve problems
  • Self-motivated and willingness to learn
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Enrolled in final year of an undergraduate program or a graduate program at an accredited college or university with a degree or major course work in City, Regional or Urban Planning or a closely related field
  • Working knowledge of planning principals and concepts and zoning codes and practices
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS is preferable 
  • Interest in helping the community
  • Current valid driver’s license
Key Responsibilities

The Planning Intern will contribute to the Planning Team’s current and future client projects including the compilation and completion of Plans of Conservation and Development, Master Plans, Affordable Housing Plans, zoning studies, market analyses and additional special study projects through the following tasks:
  • Researching policies and best practices
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Creation of public engagement materials
  • Development of PowerPoint presentations
  • Zoning code reviews
  • Drafting report text
  • Creation of graphics and visualizations
  • Participation in virtual or in-person public workshops
